| Hassan Sachedina is a specialist consultant in Environment and Development, with broad expertise in sustainable rural livelihoods and natural resources management, particularly in the African context.
Born in Kenya, Hassan has over 23 years of experience in East, Central and Southern Africa.
After completing undergraduate studies in Environmental Studies and French in the United States at Middlebury College, Hassan graduated with an MSc in Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford in 1998. |

Hassan's hands-on track record includes appointments as Senior Program Officer for the African Wildlife Foundation ( AWF ) in Kenya and Tanzania, support to the International Gorilla Conservation Programme IGCP, Technical Adviser to the Laikipia Wildlife Forum in Kenya, Project Coordinator of the Selous Rhino Trust in the Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania and work with Save the Rhino Trust, Namibia.
Hassan passed his PhD viva in May 2008 through the Oxford University Centre for the Environment. Hassan's PhD thesis, entitled “Wildlife is Our Oil: Conservation, Livelihoods and NGOs in the Tarangire Ecosystem, Tanzania” examines the socio-economic impacts of community-based conservation on Maasai communities and explores the political ecology of conservation in northern Tanzania - including the problems of conservation in this area and the impact of gemstones on pastoral diversification. Hassan is currently a visiting scholar at the University of Kansas affiliated with the Kansas African Studies Center and was named a Kinship Conservation Fellow in 2008 (http://www.kinshipfellows.org). Hassan is also a Graduate Research Fellow of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and Biodiversity Coordinator for East Africa for the Global Initiative for Traditional Systems (GIFTS) of Health, Oxford University Institute of Health Sciences.
Hassan speaks fluent English, Kiswahili and French.
