Simon Munthali, Malawian

BSc (Malawi), BSc (Guelph, Canada), PhD (Rhodes, South Africa)

Dr. Munthali holds professional degrees in Agriculture, Wildlife Biology and PhD in Ichthyology. Starting his career as a park manager in 1981, he has held various senior positions, including heading the SADC Wildlife Technical Coordination Unit, Chief Technical Advisor for the World Bank’s Transfrontier Conservation Areas Project involving Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe, and Regional Director (southern Africa) for the African Wildlife Foundation.

Over the past 10 years he has focussed on promoting progressive approaches to integrating conservation science and enterprise development as a means of alleviating poverty and providing incentives to the rural poor living in agriculturally marginal lands, so that they can adopt biodiversity conservation as an adjunct to their rural livelihoods. Dr. Munthali is a recipient of the 1997 WWF Golden Panda Award for his contribution to biodiversity conservation. He has published over 20 papers on biodiversity conservation in various international journals.
