| Services: Climate Change Strategy |
In 2009, Kilimanyika undertook
a project for the Royal Norwegian Embassy
(RNE)
to assist in showcasing Tanzania's REDD
work for the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
in Copenhagen, Sweden. By effectively presenting
lessons learned from Tanzania's activities
relating to REDD, the aim is that other
countries present will apply this knowledge
when negotiating an internationally-approved,
performance-based system for forest carbon
trading.
In 2009, Kilimanyika performed an assessment
of the lessons learned from REDD activities
linked to WWF
forestry programmes in Tanzania. Through
this work, Kilimanyika comprehensively assessed
Village Land Forest Reserves (VLFRs) as
well as Joint Forestry Management (JFM)
in order to assess which method is more
effective for communities. Core to the scope
of this project was ensuring management
approaches which reconcile biodiversity
conservation and socio economic developments
on the local, national and international
levels.
In 2009, Kilimanyika was involved in developing
the Quick Start Initiative for the United Nations
UN-REDD program; which aims to strengthen Tanzania's
readiness for REDD as a component of the
Government's evolving REDD Strategy, and
is integrated with other REDD activities
in the country. The Initiative is an integral
part of the ONE-UN Programme in Tanzania
and the Joint Programme on Environment,
which has the objective of 'Increasing Funding
for Environment Management from International
Environment Funding Mechanisms with a focus
on Climate Change and natural resource management'.
