Dr. Samuel Kasiki

Dr. Samuel Kasiki is a  professional in the fields of biodiversity conservation & management and planning for sustainable utilization of natural resources. He worked for Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for 35 years, twelve and a half  of which he was the Director Biodiversity Research and Monitoring, and one year as the Principal Kenya Wildlife Service Training Institute. As Director of Research at KWS, Samuel was responsible for advising the KWS Director General, and the Kenya government in general, on  policies and strategies regarding the conservation and management of wildlife in Kenya and beyond by using the best available scientific evidence.

During his tenure at KWS Samuel represented the Kenya government, and the Africa region, as an expert in a number of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), where he also served as a member of the CITES Scientific Council representing the Africa Region from 2011 to 2017. He also served as a member of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) Scientific Council from 2016  to 2020 where he represented Kenya and the Africa Region. He also represented the Africa Region in the CMS Strategic Planning Committee for 3 years. Furthermore, Samuel participated is many other MEAs, protocols and agreements  as  a delegate of the Kenya government,  including the Convention on Biological Biodiversity (CBD), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES),  the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), among others.

During his term at KWS, Samuel worked closely with many nature conservation government agencies, NGOs, donor agencies (UNDP, EU, USAID,)  as well as many international and local partners, including civil society and community-based organizations.  

Samuel holps a PhD in Ecology, MSc in Conservation Biology, a BSc in Botany and Zoology as well as an Executive MBA. He is also trained on governance and strategic planning.
